The Serengeti — 'Endless Plain' in Maasai — is the world's most famous wildlife sanctuary, covering 14,763 km² of golden savannah, riverine forest and rocky kopjes in northern Tanzania.
It is home to the Great Migration, the largest land-animal migration on earth — 1.5 million wildebeest and 500,000 zebras moving in an endless clockwise circuit through the Serengeti and Kenya's Maasai Mara. The Mara River crossings (July–October) are the most dramatic moments: thousands of wildebeest plunging into crocodile-infested water in a matter of minutes.
This 5-day itinerary combines the central Seronera Valley (predator capital of East Africa), the northern migration zone, and a full day on the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater.
Fly or drive from Arusha to the Serengeti (scenic flight approx. 1 hour; drive approx. 8 hours via Ngorongoro). Afternoon game drive across the Seronera Valley. First lion pride sighting. Overnight at tented camp.
Full day tracking the Big Five across the Seronera Valley. Lion prides, leopards resting in sausage trees, cheetah families on termite mounds. The Serengeti has the highest density of large predators on earth. Overnight at camp.
Drive north to the Mara River zone (Jul–Oct: wildebeest river crossings; Jan–Mar: calving season with 8,000 wildebeest born per day in the southern Serengeti). Full day in the migration zone. Overnight at camp.
Drive to the Ngorongoro Crater rim. Descend 600 metres to the crater floor — the world's largest intact caldera at 260 km², containing 25,000 animals in a self-contained ecosystem. Full day. Return to rim lodge. Overnight.
Morning game drive. Fly or drive back to Arusha. Transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport or Arusha town.
The Kenyan side of the Great Migration — equally spectacular.
