At 5,895 metres, Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest peak in Africa and the world's tallest free-standing mountain — an iconic flat-topped volcanic massif rising dramatically from the Tanzanian plains.
The Machame Route — known as the 'Whiskey Route' — is widely considered the most scenic and the best for acclimatisation, ascending through five distinct vegetation zones: rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, glacial zone and the summit crater.
Our 8-day itinerary includes the full ascent and descent with an experienced guide and porter team, all mountain meals, camping equipment and a summit certificate. No technical climbing experience is required — only fitness, determination and the right attitude.
Transfer from Arusha hotel to Machame Gate (1,830m). Register, meet your guide and porter team. Trek 5–7 hours through lush montane rainforest. Arrive Machame Camp. Hot meal and overnight in tent.
Trek across open moorland and lava ridges, climbing steeply to the vast Shira Plateau. Views of the Western Breach open up. 5–7 hours. Overnight at Shira Camp.
Acclimatisation day — critical for summit success. Ascend to the Lava Tower (4,630m) for altitude adjustment, then descend to Barranco Camp. The famous Barranco Wall dominates the view ahead. 7–8 hours.
Climb the dramatic Barranco Wall — a hands-and-feet scramble with spectacular views on a clear day. Continue to Karanga Camp. 4–5 hours. Rest afternoon. Overnight.
Short but steep climb to Barafu — the launch pad for the summit push. Rest, eat, prepare kit. Briefing from your guide. Early dinner at 17:00. Sleep by 19:00 ahead of the midnight start.
Midnight departure in the dark and cold. 6–8 hour ascent on loose scree and frozen ground to Stella Point (5,739m) on the crater rim — most people feel the altitude here. Push on to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the Roof of Africa. Descend all the way to Mweka Camp (3,100m). 14–18 hours total. Overnight in tent.
Final descent through rainforest (3–4 hours) to Mweka Gate. Certificates presented. Drive to Arusha hotel — hot shower, cold beer and a real bed. Overnight in Arusha.
Morning at leisure in Arusha. Transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for your departure flight.
