Lake Bunyonyi — 'Place of Many Little Birds' in Rukiga — lies at 1,962 metres above sea level in Uganda's rolling south-western highlands, near the Rwanda border. With 29 islands and terraced hillsides plunging into turquoise water, it is widely regarded as the most beautiful lake in Africa.
Unlike most African lakes, Bunyonyi is free of hippos and bilharzia, making it safe to swim and kayak. The surrounding hills are farmed by the Bakiga people in a landscape of extraordinary terraced beauty.
This peaceful 2-day retreat can be combined with gorilla trekking in Bwindi (just 2 hours away) or Kibale chimpanzee trekking as a perfect end to a Uganda safari.
