Kibale National Park in western Uganda protects one of the most extraordinary concentrations of primates on earth — 13 species in a single forest, including over 1,500 chimpanzees.
Chimpanzee trekking here is widely regarded as the world's finest. The habituated communities are accustomed to human visitors, allowing intimate encounters as they forage, play, chase and call through the forest canopy.
This 2-day itinerary includes the drive from Kampala, a visit to Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary (community-managed, excellent birding and red colobus monkeys), and the full chimpanzee trekking experience with a Uganda Wildlife Authority guide.
Drive from Kampala to Fort Portal (approx. 4.5 hours) through Uganda's scenic tea country and the Rwenzori foothills. Check into lodge near Kibale. Afternoon walk in Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary — a community-managed reserve with red colobus monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys and over 200 bird species. Evening briefing for tomorrow's trek. Overnight at lodge.
Early breakfast. Transfer to Kibale NP headquarters for briefing and group assignment. Trek into the forest with Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers and an expert tracker. Once the chimps are found, spend one full hour observing them — feeding, grooming, playing and occasionally giving their spine-tingling calls. Return to lodge for lunch. Drive back to Kampala, arriving early evening.
Track mountain gorillas — combine with Kibale for a primate double.
Tree-climbing lions and Kazinga Channel boat cruise.
