The Garden Route stretches 300 km east along South Africa's southern coastline, linking ancient indigenous forests, lagoons, cliffs and the Tsitsikamma wilderness. It is one of the world's great scenic drives.
This 8-day itinerary combines Cape Town's highlights — Table Mountain, the Winelands, Cape Peninsula and Boulders Beach penguins — with a drive east along the Garden Route to Knysna, Tsitsikamma and the Oudtshoorn Winelands hinterland.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Arrival in Cape Town
Arrive at Cape Town International Airport. Transfer to hotel in the V&A Waterfront area. Evening at the vibrant waterfront. Welcome dinner. Overnight in Cape Town.
Table Mountain & Cape Town City
Morning cable car up Table Mountain (weather permitting) for 360-degree views over the city, ocean and Cape Peninsula. Afternoon city tour: Bo-Kaap colourful houses, Company's Garden, Castle of Good Hope. Evening on Long Street. Overnight in Cape Town.
Cape Winelands — Stellenbosch & Franschhoek
Full day in the Cape Winelands. Visit award-winning estates in Stellenbosch and Franschhoek — the culinary capital of South Africa. Wine tastings, cellar tours and a long lunch in one of Franschhoek's world-class restaurants. Overnight in Cape Town.
Cape Peninsula — Penguins & Cape Point
Drive the spectacular Chapman's Peak road. Visit Boulders Beach (African penguins), Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve and Cape Point. Return via Hout Bay fish market. Overnight in Cape Town.
Garden Route — Hermanus & Knysna
Begin the Garden Route east of Cape Town. Pass through Hermanus — famous for land-based whale watching (Aug–Nov). Continue to Knysna on its beautiful lagoon. Oysters for dinner. Overnight in Knysna.
Tsitsikamma Forest & Garden Route
Drive to Tsitsikamma National Park — ancient yellowwood forest, the dramatic Storms River mouth suspension bridge and, for the brave, Bloukrans Bridge bungee (optional, world's highest commercial bungee at 216m). Overnight on the Garden Route.
Cango Caves & Oudtshoorn
Drive inland over the spectacular Swartberg Mountain Pass to Oudtshoorn in the Klein Karoo. Visit the Cango Caves — a 20 million-year-old cathedral of stalactites — and the world-famous ostrich farms. Return toward Cape Town. Overnight in Swellendam or Paarl.
Return to Cape Town & Departure
Scenic morning drive back to Cape Town. Transfer to Cape Town International Airport for departure.
