Best Time to Visit the Maasai Mara — A Month-by-Month Guide

Levine Adventures   26 February 2026   6 min read

The Maasai Mara is spectacular year-round — but timing your visit right makes the difference between a good safari and a truly transcendent one.

July–October — The Great Migration

Peak season, and for good reason. Between July and October, 1.5 million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle cross the Mara River from Tanzania in the single most dramatic wildlife spectacle on earth. River crossings happen daily — choose a camp near the Mara River. Book 6–8 months in advance.

January–March — Calving Season

The short dry season is one of the Mara's most underrated periods. Wildebeest calving in the Serengeti means predator activity in the Mara is extraordinary — lions, cheetahs and hyenas are highly active. Fewer crowds than peak season and better accommodation rates make this a superb value window.

June — The Build-Up

The wildebeest herds begin arriving in June. Game viewing is excellent, costs are rising but not yet at peak, and the landscape has greened up beautifully after the April–May rains.

April–May — Green Season

The long rains make April–May the quietest period. The bush is lush and beautiful for photography. Birdlife is exceptional. Roads can be challenging in heavy rain, and some camps close for maintenance. Accommodation is at its lowest rates — a good option for budget-conscious travellers who don't mind some rain.

Our Recommendation

For migration river crossings: July–September. For quiet, affordable game viewing with high predator activity: January–March. For photography and birdlife: April–May. Whatever month you visit, the Maasai Mara will not disappoint.
