Africa's Big Five: Where, When & How to See Them All

Levine Adventures   26 February 2026   7 min read

The Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino — were originally named by hunters as the five most dangerous animals to hunt on foot. Today, they're the five most sought-after sightings on safari.

Lion — The Safari Icon

Lions are found across East and Southern Africa, but the Maasai Mara (Kenya) and Serengeti (Tanzania) offer the densest populations and most reliable sightings. Uganda's Queen Elizabeth National Park is famous for its tree-climbing lions in the Ishasha sector — a behaviour seen in very few places worldwide. Best sightings: early morning and late afternoon.

Leopard — The Elusive One

The leopard is the hardest of the Big Five to spot. Nocturnal and extraordinarily secretive, they rest in trees during the day. Sabi Sand (adjacent to Kruger, South Africa) and the Maasai Mara offer the best diurnal sightings. Night game drives — where available — dramatically improve your chances. Patience and a good guide are essential.

Elephant — Africa's Gentle Giant

Elephants are found across most major safari destinations, but Amboseli National Park in Kenya is the gold standard — herds of hundreds against the snow-capped backdrop of Kilimanjaro produce some of the most iconic wildlife photographs in existence. Bwindi's forest elephants are smaller and wonderfully atmospheric.

Buffalo — The Unpredictable Herd

African buffalo are common in most savannah parks and often found in vast herds of several hundred. Deceptively dangerous when cornered, they're the species most responsible for safari guide fatalities. Queen Elizabeth NP (Uganda), Maasai Mara and Kruger offer consistently excellent sightings.

Rhino — The Rarest

Rhino are the hardest Big Five member to find due to devastating poaching losses over recent decades. Best options: Ol Pejeta Conservancy (Kenya), Lewa Wildlife Conservancy (Kenya), Hluhluwe-iMfolozi (South Africa), and Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary (Uganda) — the only place in Uganda where you can see rhinos roaming freely.

Best Parks for the Complete Big Five

For all five on a single trip: Kruger National Park (South Africa) — reliable year-round. Ngorongoro Crater (Tanzania) — the world's best setting for all five in a single day within a volcanic caldera. Maasai Mara (Kenya) — lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, black rhino (introduced).
