The Schengen visa allows entry into 27 European countries on a single application. For Ugandan passport holders, here's exactly how to apply — step by step, without the stress.
What is the Schengen Visa?
The Schengen Area comprises 27 European countries including France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands. A single Schengen visa allows you to move freely between all member states for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. The UK is not part of Schengen and requires a separate visa.
Which Embassy Do You Apply To?
Apply to the embassy of the country where you will spend the most time. Visiting Paris for 4 days and Rome for 2 days? Apply to the French Embassy in Kampala. If time is equal, apply to the embassy of your first entry point. For a Paris + London itinerary, you need both a Schengen visa (French Embassy) and a UK visa (separate application).
Required Documents
Standard requirements include: valid passport (at least 6 months validity beyond travel dates), completed application form, 2 recent passport-size photos, confirmed flight itinerary, confirmed accommodation bookings for all nights, travel insurance with minimum €30,000 medical cover, bank statements (last 3–6 months), employment letter or business registration, and proof of financial means adequate for your trip duration.
The Application Process
Book an appointment at the relevant European embassy or their visa application centre (most use VFS Global or TLScontact in Kampala). Submit your documents in person. Pay the visa fee — currently €80 for most Schengen visas. Biometrics (fingerprints) will be taken at your appointment. Standard processing takes 15 working days. Apply at minimum 6 weeks before travel.
Common Reasons for Refusal
Insufficient bank balance relative to trip cost. No confirmed return flight. Vague or inconsistent itinerary. First-time applicant with no travel history — be especially thorough with documentation. Missing travel insurance. Levine Adventures prepares a professionally written cover letter and detailed itinerary for every visa application, which significantly strengthens your file.
