Most travellers think of the Kampala–Bwindi road as simply the route to get there. But the drive through Uganda's heartland is itself a journey worth experiencing.
The Route at a Glance
The main route runs southwest from Kampala: through Masaka, Mbarara, then south through Kabale to your chosen Bwindi sector. Total distance is approximately 480–540 km — allow 8 to 10 hours with stops. Our 4WD vehicles are comfortable and our drivers know every kilometre.
The Equator Crossing at Kayabwe
About 70 km south of Kampala, you'll cross the equator at Kayabwe. The roadside monuments are cheerful and impossible to resist — photos straddling the northern and southern hemispheres are compulsory. The water-bucket experiment demonstrating the Coriolis effect is genuinely fascinating.
Lake Mburo — Optional Detour
Just beyond Mbarara, a short detour brings you to Lake Mburo National Park — Uganda's smallest savannah park and the only place in Uganda where you can see zebra and impala. A brief game drive or guided walk adds 2–3 rewarding hours to the journey.
The Kabale Highlands
As you approach Kabale — often called the Switzerland of Uganda — the landscape transforms into breathtaking terraced hillsides that look almost impossibly steep. Every available slope is cultivated into neat, stepped fields of bananas, sorghum and vegetables. Lake Bunyonyi, just 6 km from Kabale town, is among Africa's most beautiful lakes.
Tips for the Drive
Pack water and snacks — roadside stops are available but basic. Bring a good camera, because the scenery demands it. A travel pillow helps on longer stretches. Don't be in a rush — the joy of this drive is in what you see along the way, not how quickly you arrive.
